Retail or Market: Knowing How Every Product Is Priced

If you’ve browsed the Route27 online store this week, you may have noticed a small addition to our product listings. Every item now carries a ribbon that tells you how it’s priced: Retail or Market.

It’s a small change, but one we think matters.

The Space // Revealed

Okay. This is the one I have been waiting to share.

Route 27 is still pretty new. It started as a collecting habit, boxes and binders and a steady stream of parcels making their way from Japan to Canberra, and somewhere along the way it grew into something bigger. Since then it has mostly lived on screens: a Discord full of you lot, an Instagram grid, and a community that kept turning up. But that was always meant to lead somewhere.

Here is where. These are the first proper looks inside our home at 24 Mort Street in Braddon. The fitout starts soon, so this is what we are building toward rather than what is standing today. Not long now, though.

I want to walk you through it a bit, because a lot of thought went into every corner.

The whole idea in two words

Restrained spectacle. That was the brief I kept coming back to. I did not want a loud room. I am not a loud person, and I do not think a good card shop needs to shout at you. I wanted one thing to really sing, and everything else to sit back and let it.

Like the quiet around a campfire, basically.

That orange counter

You cannot miss it, which is the point. The heart of the room is a backlit orange island with our name hanging above it on a canopy. It glows. Walk in and your eye goes straight to it.

Read the canopy and you have got our whole philosophy in three words: cards, collectibles, community. There is seating right there too, so you can pull up, chat, and actually look at something properly before you commit.

The walls

Light oak all the way around. Warm, simple, and built to let the sealed product do the talking without a busy backdrop fighting it. The vintage stuff lives behind glass. Nothing is crammed in, because when the product is this good you do not need to pile it high to make it feel like a lot.

And keep your eyes peeled on the shelves. A couple of familiar faces are hanging around. I will not spoil who.

The singles wall

One whole wall is singles, in those black grid cases, packed in and easy to scan. This is not just a collector's wall, though. A big part of what we want to do is help you build. Come in chasing a playset for your next deck and we want it sitting there, ready to slot straight in. The upgrade you have been meaning to make, right where you can find it.

The table

Down the back there is a big communal table, and this might be my favourite thing in the whole place.

Route 27 was never supposed to be a walk in, pay, walk out kind of shop. It grew out of a community, and this table is where that community finally gets an address. Sit down, trade, play, show someone the card you are proud of. A local should feel like it is yours, and that is what this is for.

New to the game? Even better

And you do not need to already play to pull up a chair. From the day we open, new players are welcome, no experience needed. Borrow one of our store decks, bring a friend along, and just have a go. Learn it together at the table, no pressure and nothing to buy first. That is honestly how most of us fell for this in the first place.

Nearly there

There is still a gap between these renders and an open door, and I will keep showing you the build as it comes together. But this is the shape of it now, and honestly I could not wait to let you see it.

24 Mort Street. See you soon.

Why Route27 Exists

Why Route27 Exists

Why Route27 Exists

I was a gen one kid.

Back when there were 151 Pokémon and a glitch called MissingNo living in the spaces between them. I traded in the schoolyard, argued about type matchups I only half understood, and carried a small binder everywhere like it held something that mattered. To me it did.

Then life moved on, the way it tends to. The binder went into a box. The box went into a cupboard. Years passed and I mostly forgot how much that world had meant to me.

What brought it back was my son.

It started with him wanting to rip packs. That was the whole draw at first. The sound of the wrapper, the flip of each card, the small hope that the next one would be the one. And the smell. Freshly opened packs have a distinct one that has not changed in twenty years, and the moment it hit me I was ten years old again. I remembered all of it exactly.

From there it grew into something slower. He started asking what the cards actually did, so I began teaching him how to play. One rule at a time, one turn at a time. The photo at the top is one of those nights. Me walking him through the bench, the prize cards, the shape of a turn. Him laughing because he had just done something clever and knew it.

I did not expect what came next. Teaching him brought the whole thing back for me. Not the soft nostalgia you feel flipping through old photos. The real version. The part of me that genuinely loved this, that found focus and calm and a quiet kind of joy in a game played with little creatures on cardboard.

So that is where Route27 comes from. Not a business plan first and a passion bolted on afterwards. The other way around.

I am building the shop I would have wanted as a kid and the shop I want to bring my son to now. A place that treats the cards with respect. Somewhere you can learn to play without feeling rushed, find the single you have been chasing, and talk to someone who actually cares about the same things you do.

I am introverted by nature, so I am not going to shout about any of this. That is not the plan. Route27 is meant to be a quiet kind of presence. Steady, considered, run by someone who was in this long before it was a shop and will still be in it long after. A place for people who already know why they are here.

That is the honest reason. My son handed my own childhood back to me across a dining table, one turn at a time. Route27 is what I decided to do with it.

Thanks for being here at the start.

A note on Japanese product pricingA note on Japanese product pricing
A note on Japanese product pricing

Over the past several months, the cost of Japanese products has been gradually rising. We've been doing our best to keep our prices stable — and so far, we've managed to do exactly that.

Anticipating these changes, we bought ahead — stocking up on inventory before the price increases hit. That means the prices you see right now are still the old rates, and they'll stay that way until our current stock runs out.

Once that stock is gone, we'll need to reflect the new costs in our pricing. We wanted to give you a heads-up now rather than surprise you later. Thank you for your continued support and understanding — transparency matters to us.
